Former Finance Minister and BJP leader Yashwant Sinha joins TMC ahead of the Bengal assembly election 2021. Joining the opposition Saturday, Sinha cited the 'attack' against TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee as the "tipping point" for his switch. Sinha said his reason to rejoin politics after quitting the BJP in 2018 is the "extraordinary situation" India is going through.
The 84-year-old joined Trinamool Congress in the presence of other party members in Kolkata. He said, "The tipping point was the attack on Mamata Ji in Nandigram. It was the moment of decision to join TMC and support Mamata Ji."
"The country is facing an unprecedented situation today. The strength of democracy lies in the strength of the institutions of democracy. All these institutions including the judiciary have become weak now," he added.
Yashwant Sinha Joins TMC Post Mamata Injury
Sinha served as Finance Minister on the BJP government between 1990 and 1991, and then more prominently from 1998 to 2002 during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's rule. He had quit the saffron party in 2018 saying that "democracy was in danger."
Echoing the same, Sinha during his TMC joining said, "BJP during Atal Ji's time believed in consensus but today's government believes in crushing & conquering."
Banerjee, during her Nandigram visit to file her nomination for the seat on Wednesday, was allegedly attacked by 4-5 men. She suffered multiple injuries and sought treatment at a Kolkata hospital for two days. The TMC has pinned the perpetration of the 'attack' on BJP. Full story here.
