In Assam's Goalpara district, a Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leader, Jonali Nath was discovered dead in the proximity of National Highway-17. Nath's family alleged that her death resulted from a planned murder and the police are currently investigating the death.
Nath served as the BJP's district secretary in Goalpara. On Sunday around midnight, her body was discovered in the Krishnai Salpar neighbourhood.
The police launched a search operation to nab the assailant and have arrested 28-year-old Hasinur Islam in connection with her death. He was apprehended for questioning and confessed to the murder.
Reportedly, the accused said during the interrogation that he was in a relationship with the BJP leader and they had an argument in the car. The Inspector General of Police (CID) Devraj Upadhaya said the accused attacked Nath, which lead to her death. He then dumped the body on the national highway and fled the scene.
BJP Leader Jonali Nath Found Dead
Nath's family members reportedly told the police that she had departed for Islampur on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. for personal work.
Her spouse attempted to call her at approximately 7 o'clock, but the phone remained unanswered. Her body was discovered about 12 am after the family members later told the police about the incident. The family claimed that Jonali's body showed several signs of injury.
Family members told reporters on Monday that the evidence indicates that she was brutally murdered and that after the crime, the criminals dumped her body.
The Goalpara Police have opened an inquiry. Officials with knowledge of the situation said that two individuals have been taken into custody.
BJP leader Ashok Singhal asked for an investigation while condoning the incident.
He stated on his official Twitter account that in order to guarantee that justice is done, a thorough investigation would be conducted. He added that are dedicated to scrutinising the facts behind this regrettable incident.
Bimal Borah, a minister from Assam, also sent his sorrow for the unfortunate event. He stated on his official Twitter account that he was deeply saddened and horrified to learn of the unfortunate and unforeseen death of Jonali Nath, Assam's Goalpara District Secretary.
Borah promised that the individuals responsible for the politician's death would face the consequences and that justice would be served.
The spokesperson for Assam BJP Jury Sharma Bordoloi said that the late politician was known for her "unwavering commitment" and said that they are filled with sorrow due to the tragic and untimely demise of Jonali Nath.
