The survivor accused primary school teacher Rajesh Shukla, a local BJP leader Vijay Tripathi, and two locals identified as Munna Singh and Monu Maharaj of forcibly taking her in a car. The girl alleged that she was taken to another village, forced to drink liquor, and locked in a room, where she was held and raped for two days.

According to Shahdol police, the young girl went missing two days back, after which her family reported the matter at Jaitpur police station. Meanwhile, the survivor's family alleged that the police did not take immediate action in the matter and the FIR was lodged 15-16 hours later.

According to the survivor's brother-in-law, the woman was found a day later, at 10 pm on Saturday near the house in an unconscious state. She was admitted to a hospital in Jaitpur. After gaining consciousness, the survivor informed the police about the incident. The 20-year-old identified the accused men since they were known to her and her family members. It is being reported that the survivor was friends with the schoolmaster and was often seen with him.

Avdhesh Goswami, Shahdol district police superintendent said that all three accused, including the prime accused school teacher, have been booked under IPC Sections 376D (gangrape), 342 (wrongful confinement), and 34 (crime with common intent). Efforts are underway to nab the accused who are absconding, Goswami further told The New Indian Express.

As soon as the news of Tripathi's involvement in the case broke, BJP issued a release that announced his sacking from the party. "The BJP has no place for such workers involved in heinous crimes. The BJP strongly deplores such a character and crime. Thus, taking disciplinary action, it sacks Vijay Tripathi from the post of Jaitpur BJP president and membership," said the statement.
