Bindu Ammini Attacked: In 2019, Dalit activist Bindu Ammini became the first woman in the 10 to 50 age group to enter Sabarimala and offer prayers. She is news again for being assaulted by an unidentified man at Kozhikode beach on 5 January, 2022. According to her, the man attacked her when she reached Kozhikode north beach in connection with a court case.

She said that the attacker pushed her and her head hit a concrete slab. There was another person, she said, who was recording the whole incident on phone.

Vellayil Police registered a complaint under IPC section 509 (intending to insult the modesty of a woman) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) in connection with the incident. She also said that a group of people approached her just before the incident to confirm her identity. They were also mocking at her.

It is not the first time when Bindu Ammini has been attacked. Earlier, two unidentified men attacked her by spraying chilli and pepper on her face.

Who is Bindu Ammini ?

She is a lawyer, professor, feminist and activist based in Kerala.

She was one of the two women who entered the Sabarimala temple after the Supreme Court issued a verdict in 2018 that permitted women of reproductive age to enter the temple. The two were seen wearing black clothes and hurrying into the shrine. They were escorted by the police. After their entry, the priests closed the temples to purify it.

This step of the two women led to massive outrage among women across the state. Supreme Court directed the Kerala government to provide adequate security to the two women.

She is also the first in her family to attend college.

Besides Bindu, there are several women of different ages who tried entering the temple since October when the temple’s doors opened for the first time after the apex court judgment but failed due to protests from people and social media outrage. Read more about it here.
