Billie Eilish Sweeps The 2020 Grammy Awards With Five Wins

American singer, songwriter and a youth icon Billie Eilish took home five titles at the 62nd Grammy Awards on Sunday. Her single Bad Guy won Record of the Year and Song of the Year, which she accepted with her producer/big brother Finneas who has been a major inspiration in her journey. The 18-year-old singer who started her musical journey in 2015, had made a record at the Grammies this year by being nominated for six categories, becoming the second most nominated singer ever. Her song Bad Guy scored nominations for the Best Record, Best Song and Best Pop Solo performance categories. Besides, Eilish won the Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for 2019 debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where  Do We Go? Eilish also won the Best New Artist of the Year award this year.

Eilish has become the youngest artist in history to be nominated in all four top categories of Grammy Awards for music and to be recognised for her debut album.

In her acceptance speech, Eilish said that there were so many other songs deserved this award. "Thank you so much. This is my first Grammys. I never thought this would ever happen in my whole life. I grew up watching them," added a stunned and elated Eilish in her acceptance speech, reports Los Angeles Times.

Who is Billie Eilish

Born in Los Angeles, on December 18, 2001, Billie Eilish is one of the youngest American singers and songwriters to rise to fame. She made a remarkable debut with the song Ocean Eyes in October 2015, when she was only 13 years old. Eilish is the daughter of songwriter Maggie Baird and actor Patrick O’ Connell. Since her childhood, Eilish was determined to become the musician that she is today. She began her journey when she was eight years old, by joining the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus. And by the time she turned 11, she was writing and composing her own songs.

Billie Eilish’s penchant for music is said to have been heavily influenced by her brother Finneas O’ Connel who was an established personality in this field while she was growing up. Finneas was writing and producing his own songs with his band. He taught and encouraged Eilish to take up a career in music. Eilish’s Ocean Eyes was initially written by Finneas for his band and later he asked her to record it in her voice.

She is one of the most-followed artists on Instagram with 50.1 million followers, while her YouTube channel has more than 2.7 million subscribers.

Eilish's other hits and collaborations

After the success of Ocean Eyes, Eilish broughtout her next single Bellyache in February 2017 which was again produced and co-written by her brother. Pushed by the popularity of these singles, Eilish released more singles back to back- Bored (which was officially included in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why), Watch, Copycat, My Boy and Idontwannabeyouanymore. On August 12, 2017, Eilish released Don’t Smile At Me, her debut Extended Play record through Interscope Records which included all her previously released singles.

Apart from her singles, Eilish is known for her collaborations with dynamic singers. Some of her major hits in collaborattion with artists are Lovely which she recorded with the famous American singer Khalid, that has been featured in the second season of 13 Reasons Why. On 29 March 2019, Eilish released her debut Long Play record When We All Fall Asleep, Where  Do We Go? which had songs like Bad Guy, Bury a friend and You should see me in a crown among others.

Eilish's eccentric personality

Besides her songs, Eilish is a Youth icon known for her looks that have developed a cult following of their own. “Performatively dead eyes (bored, at best), hair dyed in shades of electric blue and pale purple, an all-baggy anti-silhouette,” is how she has been described by The New York Times. Eilish is known for her classic indifference to the criticisms on her songs and her D.I.Y attitude towards all her works. She never smiles in her photographs because she believes that it makes her look weak and powerless. “I could easily just be like, you know what, you’re going to pick out my clothes, someone else will come up with my video treatments, someone else will direct them and I won’t have anything to do with them,” she said in an interview to NYT, further adding, “Everything could be easier if I wanted it to, but I’m not that kind of person and I’m not that kind of artist. And I’d rather die than be that kind of artist.”
