Bill Gates and his wife Melinda Gates, have identified India’s gender based discrimination as a grave and worthy cause to dedicate themselves to. They were recently honored with the Padma Bhushan Award under the social work category, for their philanthropist activities through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
"We are honoured to receive the Padma Bhushan award for social work alongside so many distinguished awardees and thank the government of India for conferring this high distinction upon us," they said in a statement, as it appeared in the Economic Times. They said they intended to focus their efforts now, towards eradicating India’s women’s issues, thorough various schemes, hopefully in collaboration with our Government.
They said that the thought behind their initiative is the belief that all humans are born equal, and that equality needs to be followed through with for their entire lives. And with respect to India, they were excited about the "extraordinary" progress that India is making in improving the lives of its people. "We applaud the government of India's commitment and look forward to continuing to partner with them to build an equitable system where women and children survive, thrive and reach their full potential," they said in the statement.
"With landmark policy announcements in healthcare, sanitation and financial inclusion, it has shown that, with the political will, the right tools and strong partnerships, it is possible to reach the most vulnerable populations with the services they need to live healthy and productive lives," they added. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is dedicated to empower people to pull themselves out of poverty, health issues and illiteracy, especially in developing countries.
