Bhayandar Rape Case Arrest: A 22-year-old man was arrested for the alleged rape of a minor girl in the Bhayandar area of Mumbai, today. According to the charge sheet filed by the Navgarh Police Station official, a case against the 22-year-old man for the alleged rape of a minor has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as well as the POCSO Act (Protection Of Children from Sexual Offence Act, 2012).
The accused has been charged with section 376 AB of IPC, which deals with punishment for rape on women under 12 years, Section 363 dealing with punishment for kidnapping and Section 506 for criminal intimidation. In any case, which involves sexual offences against children, POCSO Act is also filed. These are all non-bailable offences.
This is not the first case of a minor's sexual assault in the city of Mumbai in recent times. On September 23, Thane Police registered a case against 33 people for allegedly gangraping a 15-year-old girl several times over the period of eight months in Dombivli. According to the police, 28 men have been detained, out of which two are minor.
On August 28, a 17-year-old orphan girl was allegedly gangraped by three men at Vasai in Maharashtra. They were arrested by Vasai Police and charged under relevant sections of the IPC, and POCSO Act, 2012.
Not just Mumbai, crimes against minor girls have made headlines across the country time and again. In 2016, a man was arrested for allegedly raping a minor, daughter of his colleague. He was booked under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
On September 14, a 51-year-old man was arrested for reportedly molesting a 7-year-old girl for 10 days at Sakinaka in Mumbai. The accused was arrested from the Andheri East area by Mumbai Police.
The recent case of Dombivli has caught the attention of the state, with Chief Minister of Maharashtra and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis taking to Twitter with their anger over the issue.
The State Vice-President of BJP, Chitra Wagh lashed out at the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alleging that they are not serious about the safety of women and demanding that in the light of recent cases of violence against women, a special session by the Governor needs to be called.
