Beyonce released her album 'Lemonade' a year ago, and in celebration of its one-year anniversary, she is offering four US scholarships. As per a statement on her website, she has established the ‘Formation Scholar awards for the 2017-18 academic year’.
The program will ‘encourage and support young women who are unafraid to think outside the box and are bold, creative, conscious and confident’
Scholarships will be given to four women who are studying creative arts, such as music, literature or African-American studies at either Berklee College of Music, Howard University, Parsons School of Design and Spelman College.
Students who are interested have to submit a portfolio of their work and an essay which follows the prompt: “How has Lemonade inspired your educational goals”.
Berklee College of Music’s President Roget Brown called Beyonce ‘a strong and inspiring role model’, after she announced the scholarship. Beyonce’s 'Lemonade' was the best-selling album in 2016.
Former US First Lady Michelle Obama has called Beyonce a role model after she announced the decision to institute the four scholarships:
Beyonce is not the only celebrity who has contributed money towards education. Pop star Rihanna has also set up a scholarship for Caribbean students studying in the United States.
