Erica Muhl has been named as the first female president of the prestigious Berklee College of Music in the United States. Currently, Muhl is the dean and founding executive director of the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy at the University of Southern California (USC). As per reports, she will take over as Berklee’s president in July 2021.

Erica Muhl: Eminent Musician and Educator

Erica Muhl is a renowned educator, conductor and composer. As per Billboard, her compositions have been featured at competitions and festivals like the Aspen Festival, the International Percussion Competition in Luxembourg, and the International Festival of New Music in Caracas. Furthermore, she has also served as the assistant conductor for the Los Angeles Opera Theater, the Pacific Northwest Wagner Festival, and the Seattle Opera.

At USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy, 60-year-old Muhl helped expand the institution's operations by introducing two novel graduate degree programmes. Also, she strengthened the academy’s social and gender diversity/inclusivity through a variety of multi-disciplinary initiatives.

Berklee College of Music’s First Female President

Erica Muhl is Berklee College of Music’s first female president and its fourth president. She will take over next year from the current president, Roger H. Brown. Hailing Muhl’s choice as his successor, Brown told Billboard, “Erica has an impressive background as a musician and was one of the prime movers in the creation of the Iovine Young Academy. I believe it is one of the most innovative programs in all of American higher education, reimagining education at the intersection of music, art, media, and technology.”

Muhl also expressed her gratitude to Berklee’s trustees and Brown for being chosen to lead a preeminent institution like Berklee College of Music. She said, “The institution you have all built has no equal, and I am deeply honored by your faith in my ability to continue to grow its mission, and to provide unprecedented and unrivaled learning and professional experiences across the spectrum of music, the arts, technology, and creative entrepreneurship.”

As per The Boston Globe, Muhl has a mammoth task on her hands as Berklee’s next president. Reportedly, the college has been marred by sexual harassment allegations against some eminent faculty members in recent years.
