A Bengaluru woman sought help from social media after her inebriated neighbour allegedly harassed her. The 24-year-old woman, whose name has not been disclosed, shared on Reddit that an old man in her neighbourhood allegedly prevented her house help from entering her building and began hurling abuses at both women in Kannada. The woman said that she called the police who allegedly dismissed her concern because the man was "old" and "intoxicated" and told her to file a complaint the next day. The woman said that she taped the verbal abuse on her phone camera.
Sharing the ordeal on the microblogging site, the woman sought help from local Bengalureans. The post garnered several reactions, and netizens directed her to file an FIR against the man using the video evidence. "Even if the police do nothing. You are sending out a message that you are going to revolt," one Reddit user said.
Woman's Scary Ordeal With Neighbour Goes Unheard
The 24-year-old Bengaluru woman said on Reddit that one of her neighbours, whom she has interacted with before, blocked her house help's way to her apartment. The man's motive behind this action was not clear, however, the woman said that he was in an inebriated state. When the woman went to check on the house help, the man started spewing abuses at both women in Kannada.
"I tried to talk to him but he kept yelling at me to speak Kannada... He does speak the languages I know and English as well, he has talked to me in English fluently before. I’m not extremely fluent in Kannada but I could understand that he was calling us derogatory terms," she wrote on the subreddit r/bangalore.
The woman further wrote, "I started recording him and at some point when I tried to gesture her to come up to me(I was up the stairs, she was below and he was standing next to me facing the stairs) he swiped at my hand and tried to kick her when she tried to climb the stairs."
Following the attempt to physically harm the house help, the Reddit user called the police for help. "When they (police) arrived, he was still verbally abusing me in front of them and they did nothing to stop him! They left asking me to file a complaint the next day. I don’t have much hope as to if they will take this seriously because he’s old and intoxicated (police’s words)."
The woman said that she and her house help are "traumatised" by the man's actions. She posted the ordeal on r/bangalore and sought help on what she could do. "Please advise if I can do anything so that this will be taken seriously and they will at least warn him to stay in control. This has happened before where he’s been a nuisance but not to this extent. It could be because nobody took the complaints then seriously. This has to stop before it escalates further," she wrote.
