8 Booked After Metro Pillar Collapse In Bengaluru Kills Woman, Son

A metro pillar that was still being built on Tuesday collapsed in Bengaluru, tragically killing a woman and her 2-year-old son. According to reports, the woman, her husband, and their son were riding a bike when the under-construction metro pillar collapsed on them.

An under-construction Metro pillar fell on a woman's two-wheeler, killing her and her two-and-a-half-year-old son while injuring her husband and daughter in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The incident was reported in the Nagavara neighbourhood of Bengaluru.

According to officials, the couple and their children were riding their bikes through the area when the iron pillar struck them. The accident left Tejasvani and her son Vihan with serious injuries. Bystanders rushed them to a nearby hospital, where they passed away while getting treatment.

Karnataka home minister Araga Jnanendra on Wednesday said an FIR has been registered against Nagarjuna Construction Company and seven people in connection to the under-construction pillar at a metro site. No arrests have been made so far in the case.

Jnanendra said five NCC officials and two officials in Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) have been booked under various sections, including 336 (endangering life or personal safety), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304(a) (causing death by negligence), of Indian Penal Code.

“We’ll take action for sure. It’s utter negligence by the company,” Jnanendra said.

Lohith, Tejasvani's husband, and their daughter are receiving medical care at the facility. According to the police, Tejasvini was riding as the passenger and Lohith was the bike's driver. Both of them were wearing helmets, the police added.

The metal-rod-built pillar was about 40 feet long. "Four people were riding a bike when a Metro pillar fell and struck it. Tejasvini and her son Vihan were transported right away to the Altius Hospital after suffering serious injuries. Sadly, they passed away there," Dr Bheemashankar S. Guled, Bengaluru East's deputy commissioner of police, said.

For the past two days, the work has been put on hold along the outer ring road. According to him, an investigation is ongoing after a case was reported. Guled added that experts are investigating the cause of the pillar collapse at the accident scene.

Basavaraj Bommai, the chief minister, has promised a thorough investigation into the accident. "I just learned about it, and an investigation will be conducted. We will determine what caused the pillar to collapse and offer compensation," he told the Dharwad reporters.

A 20 lakh rupee financial aid for the family has been announced by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).

Anjum Parvez, the managing director of BMRCL, announced that an internal audit will also be conducted. Locals and commuters in the area also protested the city's civic body, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
