A new study says that Bengaluru and Delhi are two of the best Indian cities in the world for women entrepreneurs. While Bengaluru is apt as it is the hub for start-ups, seeing Delhi on the list is quite a surprise. The Dell Women Entrepreneur Cities (WE Cities) Index 2017 shows that among top 50 global cities, Bengaluru ranks at 40th position and Delhi at 49th position from India, Financial Express reported.

However, the list is topped by New York, followed by Bay Area, London, Boston, Stockholm, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Singapore, Toronto, Seattle, Sydney, Paris, Chicago, Minneapolis, Austin, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Atlanta, Amsterdam and Portland.

Capital, technology, talent, culture and markets are the five parameters these cities were marked on and these were further categorized in two groups—operating environment and enabling environment.

Despite Delhi being on the second last position, the report viewed that the capital city can “leverage its Market Size (ranking 3rd) and low cost of technology (ranking 2nd) to improve its talent base (where it ranks 50th)”.

“Globally, women’s entrepreneurship rates are growing more than 10 per cent each year. In fact, women are as likely or more likely than men to start businesses in many markets. However, financial, cultural and political barriers can limit the success of these businesses,” Karen Quintos, EVP and chief customer officer at Dell, said in a release.

“It is in the world’s best interest that women entrepreneurs everywhere thrive,” said Elizabeth Gore, entrepreneur-in- residence at Dell.

The Delhiites feel that it is the city’s cultural background wherein most families have business setups that encourage women to take it up too. “Today, a lot of women, especially in Delhi, are realising that there should not be any gender gap and women should not be treated in an inferior manner. And Delhi has become an epicentre of empowerment because everybody wants to get out and get equal opportunity,” said Delhi-based, Sakshi Talwar, founder of Rugs and Beyond to SheThePeople.TV.

FICCI Flo president, Vasvi Bharat, stresses on the spirit of the people of Delhi who are “very forthcoming, happy to take a risk and take it forward”. She also talked about how organisations like FICCI Flo have emerged and are working actively in Delhi to help women entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs to give shape to their ideas.
