Atul Rai rape case victim: The mother of the woman who self-immolated outside the Supreme Court on August 16 and died soon after, has demanded the death penalty for Bahujan Samaj Party leader Atul Rai, whom the deceased had accused of rape.
Her daughter "embraced death in agony," the grieving woman was quoted saying by PTI Saturday. Rai, who has been in jail since 2019 after the 24-year-old now-deceased female student registered a complaint against him, "should also be sentenced to death," her mother said.
Earlier this month, the woman and her male friend self-immolated in the national capital in protest against the law and order situation. On social media, the duo had consistently alleged conspiracy and inaction on part of officers investigating Rai's rape case. Both incurred serious injuries and were being treated in Delhi. The man passed away August 21, followed by the woman who died August 24.
Atul Rai Rape Case Victim Alleged Authorities Were Conspiring, Harassing
The victim, hailing from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, was a college student in Varanasi where the now-deceased man was her peer. She confided in him about Rai allegedly raping her in 2018 at his residence and threatening to leak her sensitive material if she complained against him.
After a case was registered against Rai in 2019 leading to his arrest, the woman and man were allegedly harassed by authorities with cases of forgery and rape respectively. The female victim further claimed police and a judge presiding over Rai's case were attempting to stop proceedings against him.
An FIR in the case was also recently filed against former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur accused of conspiring with Rai and allegedly defaming the female victim. He was mentioned, among several others, by the woman in her final livestream. Thakur was arrested in Uttar Pradesh Friday.
