An incident of alleged gangrape and murder was reported from Badaun district in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. A 50-year-old Anganwadi worker was reportedly gang-raped at a shrine by three people including the priest who resides at the shrine. Even though the incident took place on Sunday night, the FIR was registered on Tuesday.

Here’s what we know of the case so far:
- According to her family members, the woman had gone to the shrine to offer prayers on Sunday night and didn’t return.
- She was later dropped home by the shrine’s priest and two of his disciples.
- The priest told the family that the woman had fallen into a dry well and before the family members could ask more questions, the priest and his disciples quickly drove off.
- At the time, the woman was still alive and had brutal injuries on her body including her private parts. She soon succumbed to death.
- When the family went to Ughaiti police station to file an FIR against the priest and two other, the station house officer neglected the complaint.

- Later the deceased body was sent of post-mortem and it was found that the woman was brutally gang-raped and suffered major injuries in her private parts. She also had one of her legs broken. There was an iron rod inserted in her private part.
- According to a report, the accused persons had tried to insert cloth and cotton into the deceased private part tp stop the bleeding caused by an iron rod.
- An FIR was finally lodged on Tuesday evening, and the priest and his two disciples were booked under three accused were booked under Indian Penal Code sections 376-d (gang-rape) and 302 (murder). The SHO of the police station was also suspended for showing negligence.
- Two of the accused persons were arrested on Tuesday.
- The priest, however, is still at large and according to the SSP of Badaun, search teams have been operated to nab the accused.
