Former Governor of Uttarakhand, Baby Rani Maurya has been appointed as the national Vice President of Bharatiya Janta Party on Monday. She had submitted her resignation for the post of Governor to President Ram Nath Kovind.

The 64-year-old politician was appointed as the Governor of Uttarakhand in 2018. Before that, she was the mayor of Agra in Uttar Pradesh. The Dalit leader of BJP had an unsuccessful feat at the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2007. That is when she took a back seat in her political career.
Maurya was the first woman to serve as the mayor of Agra in 1995. She had joined Bharatiya Janta Party in the 1990s. During 2002 to 2005, she was also working at the National Commission for Women. Born in 1956, Maurya graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Education. She later did her masters in Arts.
She is reportedly married to Pradeep Kumar who is the retired director of Punjab National Bank and currently serving on the bank's advisory board. Maurya was the chief office bearer in Scheduled Caste wing of BJP when Ram Nath Kovid was its chairman in 1995.
During that time, she worked to increase BJP's reach among the SC community on Uttar Pradesh. In her career as the leader from Dalit community, she has worked for the upliftment of Dalit women, as per reports. Before swearing in as the Governor of Uttarakhand in 2018, she was also made member on the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
