Why were they famous?
Kanta Prasad and his wife became an overnight sensation, after their efforts to run a roadside dhaba against all odds, went viral.
In 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic, a social media user posted a video showing an aged couple in tears because the pandemic had made their dhaba business slowdown. It was originally posted by an Instagrammer Gaurav Wasan with the line, “80 year old couple selling best matar paneer. Inhe hamari help ko bahut zarurat he.”
The YouTuber Controversy
Delhi-based YouTuber Gaurav Wasan was accused of allegedly cheating the owner of ‘Baba ka Dhaba’ eatery in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar. In November 2020, he was booked by Delhi Police for allegedly withdrawing donation funds raised (via crowdfunding) for Kanta Prasad, the 80-year-old owner of a now-famous roadside eatery in south Delhi.
However, a few days ago, Kanta Prasad had offered an apology to Wasan. In a video shared online, Prasad can be seen saying, "Gaurav Wasan was not a thief. We never called him a thief. I made a mistake by saying ‘I didn’t call him (Wasan) but he approached us himself,’ I’d like to apologise.”
Wasan went on to accept his apology, saying, "All is well that ends well. The person who forgives is a bigger person than who makes a mistake - That's what my parents have taught me."
Recent Developments
Prasad and his wife Badaami Devi, recently went back to running their old eatery in Malviya Nagar of Delhi after their restaurant failed to run successfully. “On an investment of Rs 1 lakh, we only earned Rs 35,000, that’s why shut it. I’m happy to run my old eatery as customer footfall is good here,” said Kanta Prasad, the owner of Baba Ka Dhaba. He was reportedly under immense financial stress due to the debt he had incurred.
