An auto driver saved a teenage girl from being gangraped in Bengaluru. The driver, Asgar Pasha, noticed that a brawl had broken out between an auto driver he knew and another man. A group of three men then joined the fight, and beat up the man. They then dragged away a girl who was with the man.
Pasha called three of his friends and went looking for the girl. They searched the area but did not find her or the men who had taken her. So he called the police who then found the men behind the railway station in a lowdown. The men were on the verge of sexually assaulting her. The girl was from another city, visiting her cousin in Bengaluru.
Pasha told The Bangalore Mirror, "I could have remained a mute spectator without helping the girl as I knew the accused. But I chose not to. But now, after action was taken against the accused, my life is under threat. I do not mind though. If something happens to me, I request the police to do justice. Everything happened within 45 minutes."
"I am ashamed to call them friends because of what they did. I was sitting in the auto and saw two of them beating the victim’s cousin and the other pulling the girl away. I knew I would be risking my life as I would be fighting known persons. But still I did not choose to keep quiet," he said.
One of the men arrested is a serial offender who harasses women in his auto. The incident happened at 12:45 am on Friday.
Suneel Kumar, City Police Commissioner, felicitated Pasha at his office, and said that such public-police coordination will help society. We need to encourage people to stand and help those in trouble instead of being innocent bystanders.
