A woman from Australia has been apprehended in connection with the suspected deaths caused by mushroom poisoning, which claimed the lives of three. The victims reportedly became unwell after participating in a family luncheon in the town of Leongatha, located in the state of Victoria, during the month of July. Another person was hospitalised in critical condition.
Erin Patterson, chef and host, organised the lunch on July 30 at her place. Her two children were also present.
The three guests, Gail Patterson, her husband Don both aged 70, and her sister Heather Wilkinson (66), passed away in the days following the luncheon at a Melbourne hospital.
A fourth guest, Heather Wilkinson's husband, Ian (69), was hospitalised for an extended period. Victoria police stated that he was discharged on September 23.
Reportedly, Gail and Don, happen to be the parents of Patterson's husband, Heather Wilkinson, and her brother-in-law, Ian Wilkinson.
As reported by BBC, Erin Patterson has revealed that she was personally admitted to the hospital after the meal, experiencing stomach discomfort. She received intravenous fluids and medication as a precautionary measure against potential liver damage.
In a statement Erin released in August, she disclosed that she had prepared a beef wellington pie using a combination of button mushrooms bought from a local supermarket and dried mushrooms purchased at an Asian grocery store several months earlier.
She expressed her profound distress at the possibility that these mushrooms might have played a role in the death of her beloved family members, emphasising that she had no intentions of causing harm to the individuals she cared deeply for.
Police Investigation
Inspector Dean Thomas, who heads the homicide squad, highlighted the intricate nature of the case during a press briefing, referring to it as a tragedy that could have long-lasting repercussions.
He also pointed out, "I cannot recall another inquiry that has garnered such extensive media and public attention, both within Victoria and on a national and global scale."
The Victoria Police indicated that the woman would undergo questioning by investigators, and a search warrant had been carried out at her residence.
