Aung San Suu Kyi Sentenced: The 76-year-old Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was on trial, has been sentenced to four years. The expelled leader is facing 11 charges, which she has denied. It includes inciting dissent and breaking COVID-19 protocols.
Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced under section 505 (b) and two years under the Natural Disaster Law. She has been under house arrest since February 2021. After the military launched a coup and toppled down her government and detained elected leaders. On December 6, she was sentenced to four years in prison for inciting dissent and breaking COVID protocols.
On the same day, the co-defendant Win Myint, who is the former president and National League for Democracy (NLD) ally has also been jailed for four years under the same crime. The National League for Democracy is Aung San Suu Kyi's political party.
The Myanmar leader has been slapped with various charges which include corruption ad violating the official secrets act. The military had taken over the power saying that there was electoral fraud that took place in last year's elections. However, independent election observers said that it was "largely free and fair."
The BBC reported that Aung San Suu Kyi is struggling. They were made aware of her condition by the newly formed National Unity Government who comprised of pro-democracy figures.
Dr Sasa (Salai Maung Taing San) the spokesperson for the newly formed National Unity Government, said that she is not okay and military generals are looking to sentence her for 104 years. "They want her to die in prison," Dr Sasa said. The military coup has led to protests across the country by pro-democracy individuals and they have been criticised for cracking down on the protesters and journalists. According to Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, at least 10,600 people have been arrested since February in Myanmar and 1, 303 killed in protests.
The Amnesty Deputy Regional Director for Campaigns Ming Yu Hah said that the verdict on Aung San Suu Kyi shows the military's determination to eliminate opposition and "suffocate freedoms."
