Aung San Suu Kyi appears healthy: It has emerged that Myanmar's deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi appears healthy during a video meeting with her lawyers.
Details on her health condition were revealed when the US ordered non-essential embassy staff to leave the country. This was done following weeks of violence over a military coup against the country's government.
Aung San Suu Kyi has been in custody since the military seized power. She wanted to meet the lawyers in person and did not agree to a discussion by video. "Amay looks healthy, her complexion is good", lawyer Min Min Soe said to Reuters on the telephone. Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested on the day the military seized power. She faces charges which include importing six hand-held radio devices unlawfully and violating Coronavirus protocol. Suu Kyi is also accused of bribery in two recent news conferences but her lawyers have disregarded the charges.
On Feb 1, the military seized power and said that the November elections where Aung San Suu Kyi's party won were fraudulent. But the election commission claimed that the vote was fair. The re-imposition of military rule after years of tentative steps towards democracy has caused unrelenting opposition. According to the Assistant Association for Political Prisoners, about 521 civilians have been killed in the protests. Several protesters were again out on Wednesday in various parts of the country. The media reported a gun battle between the civilians and security forces near the northwestern town of Kale. One villager was reportedly killed and many policemen were wounded.
The Irrawaddy news portal reported that seven people were killed in an airstrike on Tuesday on a gold-planning operation in KNU territory. People are reportedly crossing Myanmar's northwestern border seeking refuge in India. Here, a border state withdrew the order to refuse food and shelter to refugees after a public outcry. Western countries have condemned the coup and the violence. They have also called for Suu Kyi's release and some of them have imposed limited sanctions.
