Karnataka IT-BT minister Priyank Kharge expressed concern over the rising attrition rate among women employees in the tech industry. Kharge highlighted that some reports suggest that the attrition rate has been 30%–40% among women IT employees since December 2022.
Kharge’s tweet further stated that there was a decline of 1–1.5 percentage points in the overall representation of women employees in the tech industry. He emphasised his concern over the increasing attrition rate of women employees in the IT industry and noted that it was worrisome about the impact of women leaving the tech industry.
Attrition Rate Among Women Techies
Kharge’s remarks come in the wake of the increasing number of women employees, especially in the IT industry, resigning after being called back to work from the office by their respective companies.
One of India’s largest tech giants, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), recently revealed that the attrition rate among its women employees has increased more than that of men and noted that the end of the work-from-home culture may have a role to play in it.
The company’s human resources officer noted that women made up over 35 percent of the company’s over 6 lakh employees. In an interview published in the TCS’s annual report, he stated that he believes working from home during the pandemic might have rearranged the domestic arrangements for women, which restricted them from returning to work from the office even after the situation had been normalised.
TCS’s HRO further noted that women made up nearly a fourth of the leadership positions fulfilled by internal candidates in the fiscal year 2023. He pointed out that this highlighted the quality of women candidates in TC’s leadership pool and the company’s supportive attitudes towards promoting gender diversity.
The TCS annual report also mentioned the implementation of a new policy to make flexible work arrangements that would provide support and flexibility for carers of young children and expecting women employees.
