Delhi Water Minister Atishi began an indefinite hunger strike on June 21 over the ongoing water shortage in the national capital. However, as her health deteriorated, she had to end the strike and be admitted to the ICU on June 25, Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh told the media. Her blood sugar levels reportedly dropped to 43 mg/dL at midnight and to 36 mg/dL by 3 am. Singh stated that he would be writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide the national capital with its rightful share of water from the neighbouring State, Haryana. "The issue will also be raised by AAP and its political allies,” he said.

Atishi's blood sugar levels dropped to less than 40 mg/dL, causing her to end the hunger strike. She has been admitted to the ICU in Delhi's Lok Nayak Hospital, the Aam Aadmi Party posted in a statement on X (Twitter). The PWD minister had been fasting for about five days, demanding the Haryana government to release Delhi's share of water.

Delhi has been witnessing a massive water shortage triggered by the scorching heat temperatures. According to the Atishi, the water requirement is 1,005 Million Gallons per Day (MGD), of which 613 MGD comes from Haryana. However, she said that Haryana has only been sending 513 MGD, affecting over 28 lakh people in the national capital.
