Six accused from the shocking Assam sexual assault video were arrested in Bengaluru Thursday. Arrested persons - four men and two women - believed to be from Bangladesh, have been charged with the rape and assault of a young girl. An almost four-minute-long video of the crime went viral on social media earlier this week.
A case has been registered at Ramamurthynagar police station. The survivor, 22, also from Bangladesh is reportedly in a state adjoining Karnataka and a search is on to trace her so she can join the investigation. Details on the arrest here.
Earlier when the Assam police had released pictures from the harrowing video in order to seek help from the general public to catch the accused persons captured in the video. There was hardly any information to be found about the accused persons, the location of the crime and the identity of the survivor.

1. A video of a woman's sexual assault went viral in Northeastern states earlier this week, in which five people - one woman and rest men - were seen torturing her. Owing to the whereabouts of its virality, Assam Police took cognisance of the issue and on May 27, sought citizen help in tracing the people in the video. More here.
2. Some believed the video assault of the woman was linked to the alleged suicide of a Nagaland woman in Rajasthan on Sunday. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, refuting the claims, said the two incidents were different and the video assault was being investigated.

3. On Thursday, Bengaluru police arrested six persons accused in the sexual assault case. "According to the information revealed so far, all of them are part of the same group and are believed to be from Bangladesh," Bengaluru police commissioner Kamal Pant said.
4. The assault survivor, also believed to be from Bangladesh, is being traced by police teams in neighbouring states. According to Pant, she "was brought to India for trafficking and was tortured and brutalised due to a financial matter." There are alleged links to a prostitution ring in the case, reports said.

5. On Friday, reports quoting police said two accused had been shot while allegedly trying to escape arrest. As per an NDTV report, police had taken the accused back to the crime scene where the assault had reportedly occurred a week ago, officer Shranappa SD said. The two men allegedly trying to escape, identified by The Hindu as Ridoy Babu and Sagar, were shot in their legs. They are currently admitted to hospital.
