Assam Government To Offer DSP Post To Sprinter Hima Das

The State Government of Assam has decided to appoint Sprinter Hima Das as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), state finance minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma announced.  He said, “our government is pleased to announce Hima Das, our own Dhing Express, as the first recipient of this policy." Assam government has decided to award Grade-I officer positions, such as DSP and Magistrate to sportspersons who have won medals in Olympic, Asian and Commonwealth Games from the state. The move endeavours to encourage youngsters to pursue a career in sports. The government took this decision as a part of its budget 2020-21.

The government will also allocate a sum of Rs 1,000 crore for Swami Vivekananda Youth Empowerment Yojana (SVYEY), India Today reported.  Swami Vivekananda Youth Empowerment Yojana (SVYEY) will enable the youth to engage in various economic activities without leaving their native places. Recently, a stadium was named after Hima Das in Rajasthan.

We hope that more people will feel enthused to take sports as a career."  Furthermore, he said, "Hence, to encourage sportspersons, who succeed in winning in Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games, I propose to bring in a policy to designate such high achievers as Grade-I officers of the state government."

Hima Das thanked the Assam government over Twitter. She tweeted "I express my heartfelt gratitude to the Honourable Chief Minister @sarbanandsonwal sir and the Honourable Finance Minister of Assam @himantabiswa sir for having offered me the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police in recognition of my achievements and motivating me and countless budding sportspersons to strive for medal-winning performance." She also said, "Today I reaffirm my commitment to push my limits and excel in the upcoming Games and bring laurel to Assam and Bharat."

Hima Das referred to as  'Dhing Express' is a well-known sprinter from Assam. She holds the national record in 400 metres with a timing of 50.79 s that she clocked at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. She is also the first Indian to win a gold medal at  IAAF World U20 Championships for a track event.  In 2018, The President honoured Hima Das with an Arjuna Award. Hima has two gold medals that she won at the 2018 Asian Games.
