Anushka Sharma was trending today. Not because she has won some prestigious award. Her new movie trailer is also not out yet. She was trending for sharing a sun-kissed picture of herself from a beach in Antigua on Instagram. Clad in an orange and pink bikini, Anushka looks beautiful with her hair pulled back in a bun but some Netizens couldn't stomach it and trolled her for wearing a bikini. This is definitely the most absurd reason one can think of.
Key Takeaways:
- Anushka Sharma was trending today for sharing a sun-kissed picture of herself from a beach in Antigua on Instagram.
- Soon after, she became the top trend on Twitter India. Some Netizens compared the colours of her bikini to the new updated version of VLC player.
- When will Netizens learn to distinguish between what's news and what's not?
- Social Media will lose its authenticity if we don't think hard about the kind of discussions we want to have.

Just think about this. An actress has gone out on a vacation with her husband to rejuvenate and shares her happy picture with her fans and what do Netizens do in return? Troll her? Is donning a bikini that big an issue? Can't an actress exercise her right to wear whatever she wants to? Are we so fed up of boredom that we engage ourselves in these silly acts for attaining some moments of fun? Don't we have other conundrums to deal with? Seeing her trend number one on Twitter India made me realise how much work our grey cells require in order to become sane enough to distinguish between what's news and what's not.

In fact, a few weeks ago, she came under the scrutiny when she decided to take a break from work. A lot of people assumed that the reason behind the sabbatical was her inability to juggle her married and professional life. In an interview with Filmfare, she clarified that she had been working relentlessly for ten years and it is absolutely normal for her to take a break and reap the benefits of her hard work. “It’s a privilege I’ve worked hard to earn. I don’t need to fill up my calendar to justify my credibility as an actor.” she had said.
As a youngster, it saddens me on seeing that the women-centric issues that bother our country are not related to their safety at home and work but what they wear.
But again, why do we scrutinise women so much? Why can't we just let them be? Acting, wearing a bikini or taking a break is completely her choice and poking our nose in every single decision she takes shows how narrow-minded we are as audiences. We must also not forget the stellar work she has been doing for the past few years. Keeping everything in mind, we must respect and not demean her.
As a youngster, it saddens me to see that women-centric issues that bother our country are not related to their safety at home and work but what they wear. Social Media is meant to encourage people to exchange their views, share their opinions and get enlightened about happenings of the world but when our top trend is about an actress who wears a bikini, we need to rethink and reassess how we use our social media platforms and what message we are giving out to the masses.
We must not forget that a lot of youngsters get their daily dose of news from social media and promoting the wrong trends will only misguide them and convince them that real issues can't really find a place in India. Worse, it might make them believe that a woman's sartorial choices are to be given so much importance.
