Kerala woman, Anupama S Chandran was reunited with her son on Wednesday after a long battle. A family court in Kerala order the State Council for Child Welfare Committee to hand over the child to his biological mother.
Anupama had filed a habeas corpus petition in Kerala High Court earlier this month and the court had declined to interfere in the matter. The 22-year-old woman is a former leader Student Federation of India and her father is a local Communist Party of India (M) member. She had asked the police to produce her one-year-old son before the court who had been allegedly detained by her parents. The child was reportedly given for adoption with Anupama's consent.
The High Court bench led by Justices K Vinod Chandran and C Jayachandran said that the matter was already pending before the Family court at Thiruvananthapuram and they have taken steps to bring the child back. He said, "There is no reason why we should intervene or extend our hand in the matter."
The woman had alleged that because her father holds an influential position in the CPI-M she was denied justice. A year ago, her son was allegedly taken away by her parents. She had claimed that she reached the local police station, child welfare committee, DGP and CPI party leaders but justice was not delivered.
She then sat in protest outside Kerala Secretariat in October and demanded to return her missing son. Her partner Ajith also stood in protest with her. Soon the demonstration turned into an infinite strike outside the Kerala Welfare Committee office in Thiruvananthapuram. The health minister of Kerala Veena George then ordered the Women and Child Development Department to investigate the matter. The family court ordered to bring back the child from the adoptive parents and ordered a DNA test. The test was conducted at Rajiv Gandhi Center for Biotechnology, Thiruvananthapuram.
The results were revealed on Tuesday which proved that the child was Anupama's. The family court then ordered to produce the child in court. The child was brought to the family court this afternoon and court-ordered to hand over the child to Anupama and her husband Ajith. The child was then handed over inside the court and the family court settled the case.
