Besides mountaineer Anshu Jamsenpa's fifth successful climb to the Mt. Everest, there is another reason for Indians to celebrate. Anita Kundu, a Sub-Inspector in Haryana Police, has reportedly become the first Indian woman to climb the peak from the Chinese side.
She commenced her expedition on 13th April this year but encountered a lot of challenges due to adverse weather conditions. She had reportedly remained cut-off for eight days from the outside world. The scenario leavened after the weather conditions improved and she was able to establish contact with her family members.

Kundu had tried to climb Everest in 2015 also but an avalanche triggered by an earthquake injured some of her team members. The Chinese Government refused them the permission to go ahead following which she called off her attempt. She was, however, determined to accomplish the feat again soon.
Kundu had earlier scaled the Mount Everest from the Nepal side on May 18, 2013. Hailing from a middle class family, Kundu faced a lot of problems while growing up. Her father's sudden demise compelled her mother to raise the family be selling milk.
It is heartening to see Indian women making great strides in the field of mountaineering. Their passion to reach the zenith is worth imbibing. Such quintessential examples of women empowerment will go a long way in elevating the status of women in India.
