Annie Murphy as Anne Frances is called by most, won the Emmys 2020 for her performance in the comedy series Schitt's Creek. Her role as Alexis Rose in the 80 episode series got her acclaim. Aside of the Emmys 2020, she has also received earlier nominations for a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Critics' Choice Television Award, and four Canadian Screen Awards.
Schitt’s Creek swept the comedy category Sunday. Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy took home the awards for best lead actress and best lead actress in a comedy series. Dan Levy and Annie Murphy won for best supporting actor and best supporting actress in a comedy. She played the character for the series' entire run of six seasons, from January 2015 until April 2020.
With those acting wins “Schitt’s Creek” has become the first TV show to sweep all four acting awards in the comedy or drama categories in Emmy history.
The Canadian actress says on social media of herself and her interests and counts nature among them. She also likes to try "new things things".
Murphy grew up in Ottawa and moved to Toronto after her stint at university. She had lived through many career frustrations when she was cast as Alexis Rose in Schitt's Creek.
She said in an interview to LA Times:
My house had just burnt down, I had like, $3 in my bank account, I hadn't worked in close to two years. And I had just blown my very first screen test — like blown it, blown it, blown it. ... I found myself crying in the Pacific Ocean, a very snotty cry, and the universe was like, 'Don’t do this anymore. This is not for you! But then, two days later, I got the audition for Schitt's Creek.'
Annie Murphy's mannerisms in Schitt's Creek are a big hit with her floppy hands and her style of saying David. In an interview she talked about how she acquired them. "To be very, very honest, I buckled down and decided to do research and that meant me taking to YouTube for many hours on end and watching things like the Kardashians and Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton and all of those babes and I kind of Frankensteined little bits and pieces of them into Alexis, particularly this way of speaking, which is so deeply lazy," she said to GoldderBy. She added, "You don’t have to exert any energy whatsoever and I understand why people do it. And then the other thing was I noticed that, it was late one night, and I noticed that every time they went shopping, they would sassily strap a handbag over their wrist like this and then go promenade down Rodeo Drive or whatever. So I was like, “OK, this is how they carry it. What if there was no handbag and I flip my wrist over and then add another wrist,” and then I ended up with this monstrosity that has just run rampant (laughs). So those are a couple little things that I stole."
One of the things that stayed with viewers of Schitt's Creek is how Murphy says 'David'. Here's a video compilation of it.
Murphy said she is 'flabbergasted' by this whole thing. "It’s nuts to me." In the conversation with GoldderBy she says, "what makes it even crazier is that we were doing our live shows and someone in the audience piped up one night and informed us that Alexis only says “Ew, David” twice in the entire series."
