“Guru Brahma Gurur Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwaraha,
Guru Saakshat Param Brahma, Tasmai Sree Gurave Namaha”
This shlok compares a teacher to a god. Indian culture has always given a superior status to teachers, the Guru or the teacher is known for going that extra mile for the well-being of his/her students. One such example is Annapurna who teaches English to Class 3 in a government school in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu.
Annapurna Mohan wanted to provide her students of a Panchayat Union Primary School (PUPS) world-class facilities to learn. She self-funded the remodelling of her classroom by selling her jewellery. The state of education is dismal in the state most of the government schools are unequipped leaving it on the teachers to fend for themselves, and government funds often don't reach the schools in time.
Annapurna has completely transformed her classroom it's now in the league of any international classroom. She has added an interactive smart board, new floor with colourful and comfortable furniture and stacks of books.
She uses interactive techniques like using phonetics to introduce her students to new words. She feels the basis of phonetics will help her students learn complicated English words. She tries to introduce new topics through short skits. Her students can speak crisp and clear English and that to pretty fluently.
Annapurna says, “I tried to create a good environment for English in my classroom. I conversed with my students in English from the beginning of the class till the end. In the beginning, some of them didn’t understand it, but in time, they began to respond,” according to a report in Indian Express.
Annapurna used the social media to put up videos of her pupil and this has got her appreciation and support from the world over.
She now aims to change the manner of teaching across the school.
