Tony Award Winning Choreographer And Broadway Actor Ann Reinking Passes Away

Best known for playing Roxie Hart in 1977 production Chicago her other Broadway roles performances include Sweet Charity, Over Here! and Goodtime Charley.

Renowned actor, dancer, choreographer, and Broadway legend Ann Reinking passed away on Saturday in Washington. She was 71 years old. According to her family, Reinking died in her sleep.

News of the actor's death was first shared on Facebook by Christopher Dean, a dancer and choreographer, who tutors Reinking's niece and was later confirmed to Variety by her sister-in-law Dahrla King.

A statement given by Reinking’s family read, “She was visiting our brother in Washington state when she went to sleep and never woke up. We will miss her more than we can say. The world and our family have lost a spirited, great talent, and a wonderful soul. Ann was the heart of our family and the life of the party. Perhaps, Heaven has found its best choreographer. I’m positive they are dancing up a storm up there! Annie, we are going to love you and miss you always!”

A trained ballet dancer, Ann Reinking began her career with the 1965 Seattle Opera House production of Bye Bye Birdie. She made her debut on Broadway stage after being cast in the ensemble for the 1969 production of Cabaret.

Best known for playing Roxie Hart in 1977 production Chicago her other Broadway roles performances include Sweet Charity, Over Here! and Goodtime Charley. Reinking's choreography in the 1997 revival of Chicago earned her a Tony Award.

According to a report by ABC, Reinking's son Christopher Reinking Stuart was diagnosed with Marfan's Syndrome and autism. Thus she went on to produce a documentary named In My Hands, on working with children dealing with Marfan’s Syndrome. This rare genetic disorder leaves its victims with limbs that are disproportionally long. Later in her career, she also produced the film Two Worlds, One Planet which dealt with “high-functioning” autism.

Reinking is survived by her husband Peter Talbert and son Christopher.
