In Andhra Pradesh, 53 women convicts serving life sentences were granted an early release on Friday, November 27. The Andhra Pradesh government had recently issued guidelines granting special remission to the 53 female prisoners. These women had been booked for offences against laws related to matters which come under the purview of the executive power of the state.
As per an ANI report, the Standing Committee, chaired by the Principal Secretary to Government and Home Department Kumar Vishwajeet, reviewed the list of eligible female prisoners in accordance with the state government’s guidelines. The director-general of prisons and correctional services sent a prison-wise list of the 53 eligible women life convicts to various prisons, for granting premature release on Friday.

Amongst the chosen 53 women, 19 were serving their sentences in the Special Prison for Women in Rajamahendravaram, 27 in the Special Prison for Women in Kadapa, two in Visakhapatnam Central Prison, and five in the Nellore Central Prison.

Conditions For Pre-mature Release
Many of the eligible women convicts have completed degrees and developed skills like tailoring, baking, and embroidery while serving sentences in prison. The government has instated certain conditions for the pre-mature release. These conditions include the execution of a personal bond worth 50,000 rupees. The released prisoners have to appear before a probation officer at the assigned police station once every three months till the unexpired duration of the sentence is completed.

N. Roja, one of the 53 chosen women convicts, told The Hindu, “When I entered the jail, I was very much depressed and thought that this was the end of my life. Gradually, with the help of jail authorities, I started a new life. I overcame my depression and learnt tailoring and bakery works.” Another released convict, G. Kanthamma, said that she will “never commit any offences again” and “lead a responsible life.”
