AMU Library ban lifted: Girls can visit library for 3hrs

The Aligarh Muslim University Library ban has now been lifted. AMU Vice Chancellor Retired Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah has said that all the undergraduates’ students in the University will now be allowed to use the library starting 7th December, 2014. Yesterday, the first set of undergraduate girls from the Women’s College entered the AMU Library for the first time.

Last month, a number of protests were held in Aligarh against this ban. The Vice Chancellor’s sexist remarks defending the ban forced the government to intervene. The VC apparently said that if the girls were allowed to the library, more and more boys would flock to the library too. Despite the protests, the University officials stuck to their reasons. However, after the Allahabad High-Court orders, the ban was lifted.

Nevertheless, the whole process was a month long. The HRD minister Smriti Irani called the ban an “insult to our daughters.” The BJP too, sharply criticized the decision. The whole nation was appalled by this ban since it was not a right wing organization in the streets, but a reputed University denying women their basic rights. Thankfully, the high court’s orders stood firmly against it.

Following this, the Vice Chancellor was forced to send out a notice regarding the same. According to the notice, the female students can now visit the library on Sundays (the only time of the week they are allowed out of campus) for three hours between 8am and 11am. It also said that the women will be provided with transport to go to the library.
