A PhD scholar at AIIMS Delhi was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping and blackmailing his fiancée. The 25-year-old woman complained to police that the man had been sexually assaulting her and made her take abortion pills for months. The woman also alleged that the accused's family had been demanding a dowry. According to reports, the accused, is originally from Haryana's Mahedergarh and was staying at the AIIMS hostel from where he was arrested.
According to the complaint filed by the survivor, the AIIMS scholar and she got engaged in April, a month after they were introduced by their families. She said that the accused did not want to get married before December so their marriage was put on hold. In her police complaint, the woman alleged that her family had given Rs 5 lakh to the man's family as dowry during the engagement, but they demanded another Rs 25 lakh and an SUV before the marriage.
What Happened
The woman stated to the police that on May 24, the AIIMS scholar and his brother-in-law visited her when no one else was home. While sharing drinks, the two men allegedly spiked her drink with intoxicants. She said that she became unconscious and woke up to find herself lying next to her fiancé, undressed.
Further in her complaint, the woman alleged that the accused's brother-in-law also sexually assaulted her later. She also said that the brother-in-law also filmed them, which the accused used to blackmail and further sexually assault her for months after that day. She also claimed that he called her to his hostel several times. The woman stated that the accused impregnated her in October, following which he forced her to undergo an abortion. When she refused stating that she was feeling unwell, he gave her an abortion pill under the guise of "fever medication."
ACP Kavi Nagar Abhishek Srivastava said the accused has been booked under sections 376 (rape), 313 (causing miscarriage without woman's consent), 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc, with intent to commit an offence), 377 (unnatural offences), 120B (criminal conspiracy), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and the Dowry Prohibition Act. The man's family, including his mother, sister, and brother-in-law have been named in the FIR.
According to reports, the ACP said that medical examinations have confirmed abortion "We arrested the accused from the AIIMS hostel with the help of Delhi Police. A police team was sent to his hometown in Haryana for further action," Srivastava said.
