Just ahead of assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, VK Sasikala former AIADMK has decided to quit politics.
Sasikala released her statement about her quitting politics and asked the members of AIADMK party to "stand united and ensure DMK's defeat" in the upcoming elections in the state.
Sasikala known as a close aide to late chief minister J Jayalalithaa had recently came back from prison after serving four years there. She had been convicted of corruption in February 2017. She was found responsible for Rs 66 crore funds disproportion case.
After Sasikala came beck from prison this year, many had speculated about her return to politics. Just a few days after her return, she made a public announcement saying, "I will definitely take part in serious politics". She had said that the AIADMK party will rise like a phoenix. Making her political intentions clear, Sasikala had declared that she will not bow down to attempts to oppress" her.
The news of her quitting politics comes in contrast to the statements made by her earlier.
Before her conviction, Sasikala had taken the place of Jayalalithaa after her demise. But the court sentence sent her jail and Sasikala chose to leave her then loyalist K Palaniswami as the Chief Minister. But Palaniswami in her absence joined hands with rival O Panneerselvam and united the groups. Sasikala and her nephew were later expelled from the AIADMK party in 2017.
