Viral Video: Afghanistan Women Thrashed For Shopping Without Male Guardian

Afghanisthani women have been forced to comply with many suppressive and patriarchal laws and rules after the regime of the Taliban began. From educational to lifestyle restrictions, women are suffering heavily under the rule of Talibani officials.

The suppression of women and torture in Afghanistan has become a common yet horrific sight since the Taliban took over the state. They have ordered women to cover their bodies from head to toe completely when in public, restricted the fields of employment for women and also banned girls from attending schools. With every passing day, there is a new case of neglect of women's rights, freedom and choice. A video from Afghanistan recently went viral on social media as it showed women being flogged in public for shopping without a male guardian.

Viral Video: Afghanistan Women Beaten Publicly

The video is allegedly from the Takhar province of Afghanistan and was shared on Twitter by Shabnam Nasimi, an Afghanistani refugee in the United Kingdom and former policy advisor at the UK ministry, on December 1. She wrote in the caption, "This is the Taliban brutally lashing a woman in Takhar province for going to the shop without a male guardian. The women of Afghanistan are experiencing hell on earth under Taliban regime. We mustn’t turn a blind eye."

The video showed two women crouching on the ground while a man brings something like a stick or a wooden whip and hands it over to another man. The man first beats one of the women brutally and then moves on to another one.

The women cry and plead but the man mercilessly continues to flog them. A child can also be heard crying in the background while there are some men watching everything and some women sitting on the side. The Taliban announced the enforcement of Islamic Law in the country last month which prohibits women from shopping without a male acquaintance or guardian and these women were allegedly flogged for breaking this rule. With the enforcement of aspects of Islamic Law, the methods of punishment like amputation of limbs, flogging, stoning and public execution will be revived by the Taliban.
