In the latest update on the Aaj Tak Tagline Case filed by actor Rakul Preet Singh against the news media organisation for linking her name with Rhea Chakraborty's narcotic drugs case, the TV Today Network has moved the Delhi High Court against the order by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB).
The accusation against the channel was that it violated the Programme Code after Rakul Preet Singh filed a complaint against the news channel and others on the representation of the actor during the coverage of the late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death.
The actor had filed the petition against - ABP News, Asianet News, Times Now, India TV, News Nation, OTV, Aaj Tak, India Today, Zee News, WION, Zee 24 Taas and CNN News18.
The petition stated that the actor has many projects lined up and this false linkage is making her look bad publicly. The actor is also an ambassador for Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign in the state of Telangana.
The MIB had come to the decision that the taglines used by the news channel were offensive and violated Rule 6 (i) of the Programme Code, which states "no programme should be carried in the cable service which criticises, maligns or slanders any individual in person or certain groups, segments of the social, public and moral life of the country."
Accordingly, a warning was issued to the channel and they were asked to abide by the rule while telecasting any news in future.
The channel has moved the High Court saying that a no show-cause notice was issued on the matter. Plus, the allegations made by Rakul Preet Singh did not mention anything "against the taglines used by the channel." The petitioner also argued that the judgment was passed by the Joint Secretary of the MIB who was not part of the Inter-Ministerial Committee, which was formed to look into Rakul Preet Singh's petition.
On top of that, the petitioner challenged that the channel had only shown the information it was getting from Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), they also said that credits to the bureau were also given.
The matter is listed to be heard on November 25 by Justice Rekha Palli and the petition of the network was filed through Advocate Shahrukh Ejaz.
