A country where women’s sports teams are continuously fighting for equality in terms of funds, facilities and recognition; a recent event has made hundreds of sportswomen in the country smile. On 20th December, Saturday, Indian men’s Kabaddi team defeated Pakistan (45-42) at the fifth World Cup Kabaddi tournament at the Guru Gobind Singh Multipurpose Stadium and the women's team defeated New Zealand (36-27).
In the women’s team, Anu Rani was declared the best stopper for the second year, whereas in the men’s team, Yadwinder Singh Yada was declared the best stopper. Seeing the performance of the women’s team, the Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal , announced, "From next year, the prize money for the winners in the girls' category will be Rs 2 crore, same as for men.” This year, however, where the men’s team won an amount of Rs.2 crore; the women’s team received half of that amount.
Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi congratulated both the teams and said, "Great news! Our men and women Kabaddi teams win Kabaddi World Cups. My congratulations to the sportspersons. We are very proud… This is the fifth consecutive win for the men`s team and fourth consecutive win for the women`s team. Truly phenomenal performance," according to PTI.
According to a report by India.com, the India women’s team started strong and lead right from the beginning, their score being 18-14 at the half time. In the women’s team, Ram Bateri and Priyanka were named the best raiders and were awarded with a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh each.
