9-Yr-Old Haridwar Girl Invited For Climate Change Meet In Paris

A 9-year-old girl from Haridwar has been invited to participate in a conference on climate change in Paris on November 3. The conference, based on the theme -- 'Engaging legal action for climate justice' -- has been organised by a Paris-based Foundation, Fondation Danielle Mitterrand.

The girl, Ridhima Pandey, told TOI, "The Paris conference will give me an excellent opportunity to learn about problems people from various countries are facing due to climate change and the action the authorities concerned are taking to mitigate them."

In the recent past, Ridhima had moved the National Green Tribunal (NGT) alleging inaction by the Centre to tackle the adverse impact of climate change. She had taken the help of her legal guardian to file the plea, following which the NGT issued notices to the ministry of environment and forests and Central Pollution Control Board seeking their response.

Talking about the extent to which climate change affects children, she says that according to estimates of the World Health Organisation, children will suffer from more than 80% of the diseases attributed to climate change which include asthma, cholera and malaria.

She also urged the government to take concrete steps to ensure a healthy environment for future generations.

The conference will have participants from Netherlands, Switzerland, Great Britain, France and India who have approached courts on issues concerning the environment.

Lawyers and experts will also grace the conference which will hold discussions on campaigns and initiatives taken for climate by organizations and individuals to mobilise government and institutions and new approaches for environmental law and liabilities.
