An 82-year-old woman has beaten COVID-19 after following the doctor’s advice and using the ‘proning method’.
Vidya Devi from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, was infected by COVID-19 and recovered in 12 days. Within four days her oxygen levels rose from 79 to 94. Hari Mohan Srivastava told the news channel that her treatment began after consultation with doctors. He said that “While being infected, one day her oxygen levels reached 79... Gradually, the situation improved and the oxygen level rose to 94 in four days. She is now fully healthy and her oxygen level is 97 these days.”
Srivastava said that the entire family tested positive for COVID-19 but attempted to keep their hopes up and the entire family recovered. He also credited the doctors and said that the family took precautions and medication based on the medical expertise of the doctors. Srivastava said that “treatment was done with suggestion and good food and positive thinking and now all is well”. The 82-year-old woman beats COVID-19 by following the doctor's treatment plan and using the proning method.
What is proning ?
The proning method is when a person gets into the prone position and lies down on their stomach, takes a deep breath and breathes out. The prone method enhances breathing and the government stated that it will “help you breathe better”. The government stated that the method should be used if a person’s oxygen level drops below 94.
The central government said that "Timely proning and maintaining ventilation could save many lives". However, patients with a heart condition, pregnant women, and people with unstable spine or pelvic fractures were asked to avoid the prone position.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the proning method helps patients increase their oxygen level and helps them breathe easier. Hospitalised patients in the prone position show improved oxygenation. It was also linked to a reduction in mortality among patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome under critical care.
