Women Panchayat Leaders, 'Lakhpati Didis' Invited

This year, to celebrate independence in its true sense, about 400 women representatives from Panchayat Raj institutions have been invited as guests to the Red Fort. The Ministry of Panchayat Raj said in a press release that around 45 'Lakhpati Didis' and 50 'Drone Didis' will also be attending the event.

Lakhpati Didis are women Self-Help Group members who have been equipped to earn more than ₹1 Lakh per year. Drone Didis are the SHG women trained in operating drones for agriculture. All these women will reportedly be felicitated by Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on August 14.

According to the Ministry, a national workshop will also be conducted for these women on Independence Day eve, addressed by pioneering Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Kiran Bedi and other senior officers. The workshop will explore the evolving role of women representatives at the grassroots.

The Ministry said the visit of the Panchayat representatives has been designed as a "comprehensive and enriching experience", and will also include a visit to the Pradhan Mantri Sangrahalaya. The recognition of women in rural development will foster their financial independence and self-reliance.
