72 women officers from the Indian Army issued a legal notice to the Defence Ministry on August 19 over strict compliance with the Supreme Court order on granting permanent commission to women in the force.
Counsel of the women officers Major Sudhanshu Pandey told news agency ANI, "The notice has been sent on behalf of 72 women officers who are fully entitled to be granted permanent commission on the basis of a clear and unambiguous order of the Supreme Court on 25 March this year"
Pandey added that the court order clarified that the Defence Ministry and authorities concerned shall not compare the women officers with the benchmark of male officers of their batch.
The order also stated that the women officers found unfit by Number 5 Selection Board held last year and had obtained 60 per cent marks, should be granted permanent commission. The Ministry was given two months to implement the same.
72 Women Officers Denied Of Permanent Commission
The lawyer alleged that the subordinate officials are trying to mislead the higher authorities over denial of permanent commission to the officers out of their deep-rooted prejudice against women. He said they are in clear defiance of the order of the Apex Court.
The petitioners stated that according to the apex court's directions, all women officers who have fulfilled the cut-off grade in 2020, who fulfilled the medical criteria and those who are not under any disciplinary and vigilance ban should be granted permanent commission.
