Seven Month Pregnant Rape Survivor Dies In UP Due To Pregnancy Related Complications

On Thursday, a 15-year-old rape survivor died of pregnancy-related complications at the district hospital in Uttar Pradesh. The incident took place in the Bareilly district. The girl was seven months pregnant.

PTI reported that on Sunday, the police revealed that she was admitted to the hospital on the night of January 2. She passed away on the night of January 7.

The girl was allegedly raped in June last year. The incident took place when she had gone out for some work. A 30-year-old man reportedly raped her in a sugarcane field. He then warned the minor against reporting the assault to her family and threatened to kill them if she did.

According to the girl’s father, the family came to know about the 15-year-old’s pregnancy on December 6, when she was six-months pregnant.

As reported by PTI, the girl’s father had asked for permission from the district administration to abort the pregnancy. However, the permission was denied as she was already six months pregnant. Doctors also reportedly claimed that the police case was also a reason for not granting permission for the abortion.

Dr Subodh Sharma, additional director and superintendent in-charge of the hospital, according to the PTI report, said the girl was brought to the hospital in “serious condition” and her health declined further.

Rohit Singh Sajwan, senior superintendent of police, Bareilly, said, “The post-mortem report says that the death took place due to infection. The viscera of the victim has been preserved.”

The victim’s father had filed a complaint at Fatehganj West police station regarding the rape of his daughter on December 4 last year. According to the police, after the complaint, a case was registered against the accused under the POCSO Act and the IPC. He was arrested on December 6, they added.

Ashwani Kumar, Fatehganj West station house officer said that a chargesheet has been filed in the case.
