The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that is situated in the neck area of the human body. This gland regulates metabolism and therefore is a very important gland. Thyroid glands secrete TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) to regulate all body functions.

It is an autoimmune disease that occurs when there is an imbalance in TSH levels. If your body is producing more than necessary TSH, then you end up having Hyperthyroidism, and if your body produces less TSH, then you get Hypothyroidism.

What causes an imbalance?

The import of foods from different countries and the availability of so many different kinds of processed foods has caused a rise in the number of people who have hormonal imbalances in India.

In fact, every 1 in 10 people have a thyroid disorder, and 60% of those who do are women.

Thyroid hormone supplement can be taken orally to balance your thyroid, however,  these are lifelong medicines that you cannot just stop when you feel like it. Before you start with any thyroid hormone supplement  it is wise to make some changes in your lifestyle and eating habits. There are ways to naturally balance your thyroid hormone levels.

Exercise Regularly
The lack of physical exercise is the root cause of most diseases. Indians don’t add exercise into their daily routine, and this is a big mistake. Exercise aids in good blood circulation, maintaining your blood pressure and releasing endorphins.

Get Enough Iodine
A deficiency in Iodine can cause thyroid problems. Iodine is required by the body to secrete the thyroid hormone. Use iodised salt, eat lots of seafood and you’re set. If you are already on thyroid medication, be sure to check with your doctor about how much iodine you need to consume on a daily basis.

Some Fats Are Good For You
Don’t be afraid of using good fats when you cook, butter, coconut oil or olive oil, are great for you. Avoid using sunflower oil.

Take Natural Supplements (But Speak To Your Doctor About Them First)
It is always a good idea to take some multivitamins when you are having a thyroid dysfunction. As different people have different intensities of thyroid disorder, so be sure to check with your doctor and maybe get a blood test done to see which vitamins you lack.

Dr Neera says, "Certain vitamins, especially of the B group and minerals like selenium and zinc, can also help. Be sure to take the advice of your doctor before starting on them."
