A 55-year-old man accused of raping a minor girl in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh hanged himself on Friday (May 4), reported News 18.
Ended life after violent protests the previous day
He committed suicide on Friday morning following violent protests over the rape a day earlier. A police officer told News18 that the rape accused had hanged himself from a tree in Dachepalli area. Before taking the drastic step, the accused made a phone call to his relative and expressed his regret over his deed.
On May 2, the nine-year-old minor rape survivor complained of severe pain, following which her mother noticed that she was bleeding. The doctors confirmed sexual assault on the girl when she was rushed to the hospital.
According to police reports, the 55-year-old man had lured the girl with a chocolate while she was playing outside her house and raped her. He fled the spot after threatening the minor of dire consequences if she told anyone about the incident.
As news spread about the rape, protesters came out on the streets, blocked the highways and railway lines demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. Following the outrage, special forces had to be deployed. The protesters also damaged three state transport buses and burnt tyres on the road. The angry mob also destroyed the house of the accused.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu, condemned the incident and directed the police to take strict action against those involved.
