After waiting for centuries, women are now finally at the forefront of numerous fields including science and Technology. One of the biggest names in the field of tech today is that of Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, an author and activist. Sandberg has often been featured as one of the most powerful women in the world and there are not one but several reasons for it.
As inspiring as it is to see a woman at such a high position in a major tech company, being the COO of Facebook makes Sandberg more popular than most women at her position. Before Sandberg, Mark Zuckerberg and others wanted to create a cool site, and hoped profits would follow. With Sandberg joining in 2008, all that changed. In 2012, she became the first woman to be on Facebook's board of directors.
ASKING WOMEN TO LEAN IN
It is no secret that women all across the world have trouble rising up the rank for various reasons. Some don’t make it because of gender politics; others feel under confident because of years of conditioning and most discontinue work because of motherhood. Role-models like Sandberg are changing that. She has not just risen up in ranks in her career; she has also constantly advocated for the causes for working women.
WORK-LIFE BALANCE
Sandberg is a role model for women in more ways than one. She is married, a mother of two young children, and is second in command at one of the most talked about companies in the world. Sandberg has often talked about being in a Shared Earning/Shared Parenting Marriage. Women like are redefining motherhood and are making working-mothers optimistic about their future.
BRIDGING THE GAP
In a last chapter of her book Lean In, Sandberg discusses how most stay-at-home mothers often look down upon career women. She talks about Marissa Mayer and the hype that was created after she accepted her current position at Yahoo. Since women are already scrutinized much more than men, she believes women from both these groups shouldn’t have any tension between them.
LEADERSHIP
Sandberg has often talked about women leaders being liked less than their male counterparts and how their low confidence is the biggest barrier in their way of success. She believes that people need to be comfortable with women leaders and that includes women. She is not just an executive at a big company; she is a leader, a role model and an icon for our entire generation.
