Two men abducted an 18-year-old girl in Nagpur and gangraped her twice on Saturday (May 12). The girl later managed to escape and had the presence of mind to take the men's mobile phones with her.

The two accused, identified as Shaikh Salam and Shriram Shribas, abducted the girl and tied her up. They forced her to consume liquor and then gangraped her twice. They also subjected her to unnatural sex.

Presence of mind

The gangrape survivor fled the place on Sunday after both the accused had fallen asleep due to the heavy intake of liquor.

The girl showed her presence of mind by taking away their mobile phones while fleeing. This eventually helped the police identify the culprits

The 18-year-old is a first year college student and aspires to be a beautician. She had left her home on Saturday for the beauty parlour at Kushi Nagar where she was being trained. She was abducted by the two accused while she was on her way.

Both Salam and Shribas are habitual offenders and are currently on the run.

Unsafe Nagpur

Nagpur, the orange city as we call it, ranks high in the list of unsafe places for women.

As per crime statistics provided by Nagpur Police, 2707 incidents of rape occurred the city in the last 10 years. Over the same period, 2772 cases of molestation were recorded by various police stations in the city. In 2014, 127 rape cases were reported. In 2015, 178 cases of rape were reported. In 2016, the figure stood at 154 and in 2017 till November, 148 incidents of rape were reported.

However, amid the growing crimes against women, this incident has highlighted the courage and confidence of a girl despite being subjected to a horrific crime.
