The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is soon going to hold elections in the capital. The Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee has given 144 tickets to its female candidates to fight in the upcoming polls. There are a total 272 MCD seats.
The Congress has given 210 tickets to newcomers, who are highly educated youths wanting to make a difference in politics.
The DPCC only has 136 seats reserved for women, but according to its chief spokesperson Sharmistha Mukherjee, the party has given eight more tickets to women to fight from the general ward. This has taken the number to 144 tickets to women candidates.
Talking to the media at a press conference, former DPCC president and ex-MLA from Kalkaji, Subhash Chopra, said that the selection of candidates has been totally transparent this time. This has been done through the system of calling about 39,000 grassroots workers and consulting with them about the crucial decision of whom to be allotted a seat from their ward. After the workers' feedback, the party did the final selection of candidates.

The ability to win in the election, workers’ choice, focus on women and youth are some of the factors considered for the selection of candidates. Chopra added that candidates have been chosen from all the sections of society.
“A very balanced approach has been taken for ticket-distribution, keeping in mind the changing demography of Delhi. Due care has been taken to ensure proper representation of all frontal organizations like Mahila Congress and Youth Congress,” Chopra emphasised, as reported by The Tribune.
The number of seats given to women in Congress for the MCD polls is in keeping with the number of seats announced by the Aam Aadmi Party. AAP has announced 145 female candidates to represent the party in the MCD polls.
