14-Year-Old Rape Survivor Unable To Bear The Stigma, Dies By Suicide

Rape survivor commits suicide: A 14-year-old girl who consumed poison after being raped by a man at a wedding ceremony, died on April 7, Wednesday night despite her undergoing treatment. The accused has been arrested.

The rape survivor hailed from the village of Rangmatiguda in Orkel. She was present at a wedding ceremony near her village when the accused abducted her and allegedly raped her on March 31.

The incident came to light on Thursday when her father lodged an FIR, eight days later after the incident.

The sub-divisional police officer of Chitrakonda Sunaram Hembram and Orkel IIC Soumendu Tripathy took immediate actions after the complaint and rushed to Rangmatiguda for further investigations.

The accused was identified as Jaya Gain and has been arrested by the police under POCSO Act, as reported by Tripathy.

The rape survivor consumed poison on April 2. Her family admitted her at Korukonda community health centre, four days later. However, she died a day after she was shifted to the Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital at Koraput.

In another recent case, a 43-year-old man allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl in a village of Jalandhar. The young rape survivor attempted to commit suicide after the alleged rape. She used to address the man as her uncle. The accused was a tenant of her maternal house.

The accused mixed sedatives in the cold coffee of the rape survivor and allegedly raped her in her unconsciousness. Later, when the girl gained consciousness and realised she was raped, she confronted him. After being confronted, he allegedly raped her again and took vile pictures of her and threatened her of dire consequences if she reported the incident to anyone.

The man was arrested under sections 376 (2) (n) – (committing rape repeatedly on the same woman), 506 (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act.
