Two passenger trains on the Howrah-Chennai line in the Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh collided around 7 p.m. on Sunday, 29 October. The train collision between the Visakhapatnam-Palasa passenger train and the Visakhapatnam-Ragada passenger train caused a derailment between the towns of Alamanda and Kantakapalle in Andhra Pradesh.

Rescue operations are still underway while the officials said the accident occurred after one of the passenger trains overshot a signal, reports LiveMint.

13 people were killed while 40 others were injured by the collision of two passenger trains derailing three coaches. The incident occurred months after the horrific three-train collision in Odisha that killed over 280.

The last two coaches of the standing Visakhapatnam-Palasa train and the locomotive of the Vizag-Rayagada passenger train got derailed as informed by Biswajit Sahu, CRPO of East Coast Railway Zone. 

Sahu also said that the preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was caused by human error, as the loco pilot of the Vizag-Raigad passenger train did not notice the signal that impacted the collision. A high-level inquiry has been ordered into the accident

Railway Minister, Ashiwini Vishnav have offered an ex-gratia of ₹10 lahks to the families of the deceased, ₹2.5 lahks for the severely injured, and ₹50,000 for other injured victims. 

PM Modi reviewed the situation and announced another financial aid of ₹2 lakh to the kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 to injured people. President Murmu also expressed her condolences and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh YSR Jagan Mohan has ordered immediate relief measures and issued orders for other government departments of health, police, and revenue to pull quick-relief measures. He has also asked for a time-to-time update on the incident.  

33 trains have been cancelled and 6 trains have been rescheduled after the accident.
