JNU ABVP Clash: After violent clashes in the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on Sunday night over the issue of serving of non-vegetarian food in the hostel mess, the Delhi Police has lodged a complaint against unknown students of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)

A march was taken out inside the campus by the students and members of the JNU Students Union, All India Students Association (AISA), Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF). The incident was then reported at the Vasant Kunj Police Station.

“We received a complaint from a group of students who are members of JNUSU, SFI, DSF & AISA early this morning against unknown ABVP students. Accordingly, we lodged an FIR under Sec -323, 341, 509, 506, 34 IPC. Further probe is on to collect evidence & identify culprits,” said the Delhi Police.

Both the bodies - The JNUSU and ABVP initiated separate marches inside the campus to protest against the clash that broke out between the two sides.

  • On the JNU campus, chicken is served at the mess on Sundays for non-vegetarian students. For vegetarians, on the other hand, paneer is on the menu.
  • JNU students’ union (JNUSU) president and member of the Left-wing outfit Students Federation of India (SFI) Aishe Ghosh alleged that members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) created a ruckus and assaulted members of the Kaveri Hostel mess over cooking of chicken on 10th April, 2022.
  • ABVP members alleged that members of Left-wing students disrupted a prayer ceremony organized on the occasion of Ram Navmi by shouting slogans.
  • This led to violent clashes on the campus.
  •  Six students have reportedly suffered minor injuries.

  • Left groups stood outside Vasant Kunj police station demanding to meet the district DCP till late Sunday night.
  • A senior police officer confirmed that they have received complaints from both sides.
  • According to students, members of the ABVP had an objection to chicken being served as part of the dinner menu at Kaveri Hostel mess on Sunday. Furious at this, they assaulted members of the mess committee.
